Telluride Mountain Mamas

After being in the Vacation Rental business for more than 14 years and experiencing raising children of my own; I had an idea to share the "kid" mountain experience, not only with local families but especially to the visiting parents coming to Telluride. I receive so many questions from visiting families about what to do, what to bring, what to wear, where to go, that I thought it would be appropriate for me to ask a few of my close Mountain Mama friends to share their thoughts and ideas with visiting families. This is also a place where we will share our Telluride family adventures with you!

My name is Amy Dodge-Tice, co-owner of the Telluride Reservations Center. My family moved to Telluride in 1981. I was in 2nd grade when I moved here and graduated from Telluride High School in 1992 with 21 kids. There were 16 boys and 5 girls in my graduating class. It was definitely an adventure growing up here in this small town. I didn't realize the beauty and sense of community until I was away at school at CSU in Ft. Collins. After finishing school I moved back to join my soon to be husband Todd, who also grew up in Telluride. His family moved here in 1972 and started Telluride Trappings & Toggery, a clothing store, on Main Street. Todd and his business partner Wendy now own and manage the fun, hip, mountain store. Todd and I are now raising two Telluride children of our own. My son is almost 8 and my daughter just started kindergarten and is 5.

FAQ

What is a Mountain Mama? A Mountain Mama is a female person who has one or more children she cares for 6000 feet or more above sea level. It is also imperative that a Mountain Mama receives at least one hour of outdoor exercise per week. If she cannot there must be good reasons such as childbirth, adoption, work, illness, or vacation.

What do Mountain Mamas do? Most work, some don’t. But all of them have adventures with their kids. Adventures include: sledding, skiing, snowboarding, making snow men and igloos, rafting, biking, hiking, walking the dog, hockey, ice skating, swimming, rock climbing, music, theater, festivals, and anything else that includes being with our children and enjoying life to the fullest!

Are all Mountain Mamas “Hard Core”? Some are, some aren’t. I am not. But I do have mama friends that will ski steep pitched mountains and then strap on a Baby Bjorn and hike up Judd Weibe and then cook dinner, bathe her kids, read a book, do some work, and then finally go to sleep around 11 or midnight.

Are all Mountain Mamas Nice? YES, no doubt about it.
